Safety is the responsibility of everyone on campus, participants in an Employee Development Day session on safety awareness were told Tuesday.

“This college does not have an on-site safety officer,” said Thermajean Jones, coordinator for continuing education in the service trade industry. “It is you — faculty, staff and students.”

Some of the topics that were discussed during the program in the nursing and allied health complex were hand-washing, campus safety, fire safety and use of evacuation chairs.

Basic housekeeping also is the responsibility of all employees, Jones said. Workspaces can be a safety hazard if they are not attended to on a timely basis.

“Keep safety first in mind when dealing with your office space,” she said.

Another topic was the training and use of evacuation chairs. The chairs are in every building at this college, but most people do not know how to use them, Jones said.

Faculty and staff were encouraged to know where the nearest fire extinguisher and first-aid supplies are located. In case of an emergency, knowledge of those locations is vital, she said.

“Assess the area around you, and be alert,” Jones said. “Safety is all about you, the individual, here at this college. Everyone needs to be a pro-active leader in safety.”Save

Librarian Christina Petimezas said the class “was extremely helpful, and instructor Jones was very funny and entertaining.”
